DIVISION OF CROSS-CULTURAL PSYCHOLOGY

Coordinators:
Efthimios Lampridis
Vassilis Pavlopoulos

Cross-cultural psychology focuses on the relationship between human behaviour and cultural contexts. It draws on traditional psychological subjects, such as perception, intelligence, development, psychopathology, communication, interpersonal and intergroup relations, and studies them in light of contextual variables, namely ecological, biological, economic and socio-cultural. Cross-cultural psychologists are interested in the universality of psychological theories and findings, on the one hand, and in the wide range of diversity observed between societies (through the mechanism of socialization), but also within societies (through acculturation and migration), on the other. Apart from cross-cultural comparison, Cross-cultural psychology is also about indigenous psychological theories, which are native, not transported from other regions, and designed for specific ethnocultural groups. Adding a broader level of analysis, i.e. culture, to the study of individual behaviour requires the development of appropriate measures and data analysis techniques. Thus, cross-cultural methodology enriches psychological research and contributes in understanding human behaviour within the ecological and sociocultural context.
